Brookford Farm in Canterbury, NH was started by Catarina and Luke Mahoney in 2007 as a dairy farm on 200 acres. By 2012, their farm had grown to 613 acres with a diversity of organic crops and pastured meats. Brookford Farm is committed, among other things, to reclaiming and returning land and soils to optimum fertility, training young farmers in proper soil rebuilding techniques, and positively impacting the health and well-being of people and community.

Farming the Commons:

Brookford Farm is in the process of becoming a part of the Southern New Hampshire Agrarian Commons, a non-profit land trust co-founded by Brookford Farm, Vernon Family Farm, Agrarian Commons, and Agrarian Trust for the purpose of holding, preserving, and giving farmers equitable access to farmland via 99-year ground leases. Wholesale Sales Coordinator:

Brookford Farm is seeking a full time Wholesale Sales Coordinator who has a passion for local organic food, sustainable agriculture, and the sales skills needed to grow our sales in New Hampshire and southern New England. The main priority of this position is to coordinate weekly wholesale deliveries to over 60 wholesale customers throughout NH and in the Greater Boston Area. The ideal candidate will have strong logistical skills and be excited to build relationships with like-minded business, increase brand visibility – as well as carve out a place for Brookford Farm within the local food community.

Responsibilities:

  • Process orders and maintain sales software (Local Food Marketplace) specifically designed for farms to maintain and grow existing accounts
  • Maintain accurate inventory in sales software – communicate with various departments on product availability
  • Inform delivery drivers of route changes and manage routes for profitability
  • Search on route for new accounts
  • Stage orders preparing for delivery
  • Marketing responsibilities include contributing to Brookford Farm Social Media accounts to help build a bridge between the farm and the community, email campaigns, print collateral, and seeking out other marketing opportunities for the farm
  • Creating community with on-farm events such as farm tours and our summer Burger Night event series
  • Representing Brookford Farm at stakeholder events as needed

Requirements:

  • Be self-motivated, highly organized and quick to solve problems
  • Be dynamic with customers, excellent communication skills
  • Strong computer skills
  • Have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Have a passion for grass-based and organic farming
  • Have a desire to strengthen regional food systems
  • Geographical understanding of New Hampshire and Greater Boston

Experience with sales, customer service, farming, graphic design, or working for a small business is a plus!

Assistant Vegetable Manager & Vegetable Crew Members:

We grow our vegetables on 30 acres focusing on high quality, efficient production. Approximately half our acres are committed to summer crops that we pick and sell throughout the warmer months. The other half of our production is focused on producing storage crops which we harvest in bulk and sell throughout the winter months. We have a solid team of people in the vegetable department who work year-round and we hire a seasonal crew to help with the harvesting and hand weeding tasks which intensify in the summer months. The seasonal crew comes from a mix of socio-economic backgrounds ranging from local high school kids to the many Congolese refugees which we hire for these tasks.

Assistant Vegetable Manager:

A strong candidate will have experience and skills in the operation and maintenance of machinery and tractors. The Assistant Manager will be leading crews on harvest days, and helping to lead those same crews on hand cultivation tasks when not harvesting. This job requires consistent evaluation of the fields and regular communication with the Field Manager, Packing House Manager and Sales Managers. Crew Training inspection of work for accuracy and speed are some responsibilities. Also, to be able to train the crew to FSMA regulations. Other responsibilities include to keep track of a harvest log, harvest supply inventory, tools upkeep.

Dates:

Full time, beginning of March and going through November.

Candidate Requirements:

  • At least 2-year season working with produce on a market scale
  • Leadership experience
  • Familiarity with and commitment to organic practices and a strong drive

Ideal Candidates Will Be:

  • Experienced in operating farm machinery
  • Self-motivated, efficient and independent workers
  • Capable of leading small groups

Vegetable Crew Members:

Dates: Full time position with additional management/leadership roles that may available towards the beginning of next season

Candidate Requirements:

  • Passion, precision, speed, and great stamina
  • Experience or a strong interest in agriculture/local food
  • Proven work history in physically demanding positions

Ideal candidates will be experienced in operating tractors or other large machinery.

Pay is commensurate with experience and performance. Special consideration will be given to those with pertinent advanced education and/or a career mindset

Livestock Assistant:

This team player will assist with all aspects of the animals, such as feeding and watering the pigs and chickens and helping with pasture rotation for the cows. The Assistant Livestock staff will also help with milking and moving the cows along with caring for the calves. Cleanliness of animals, following proper milking procedures, and proper equipment handling are all very important.

Candidate Requirement: Must be available on weekends along with proof of a valid driver’s license.

Pay is commensurate with experience and skill set.

Apprentices for our Apprenticeship Program:

One of our endeavors at Brookford Farm is to be a training ground for future farmers. Each year, we train several apprentices who work on all aspects of farm operations, including gardening, dairy farming and general animal care. Apprentices are fully immersed in farm life and participate in seasonal and daily farm cycles from preparing beds in the spring to moving chicken fences in late morning.

The apprentice positions are for those with a little less experience looking to get more involved in sustainable agriculture. The niche each apprentice fills depends on interest, the time of year, and the needs of the farm. A possible day could include milking cows at dawn, harvesting and packing vegetables, and collecting eggs in the afternoon.

  • Our work requires passion, precision, speed, and great stamina. Ability to join our crew in 55+ rigorous hours in 5 days, through rain or shine

  • An active interest in being part of a farm community of a dozen or so people who work together very closely
  • Understanding that, in addition to great satisfaction, working on a farm involves hard work and long hours
