How Biden-Harris Can Support a Sustainable Food System

With the transition of the Presidency now formally underway, stakeholders from nearly every industry are wasting no time in making sure their priorities are at the top of an ever growing to-do list for the incoming Administration.

Over the past year, NSAC has been working with our members from across the country to identify the most pressing issues facing the sustainable agriculture community that we believe the next Administration must prioritize in order to rebuild our food system. We have come up with over two hundred actionable, policy recommendations that we will be pressing the Biden-Harris Administration to move forward on as soon as they are sworn into office in the new year. In this blog, we give a summary of key NSAC priorities for the incoming Administration. For a more in-depth read about how Biden-Harris can support a sustainable food system, refer to our most recent publication.

What the New FDA Food Traceability Rule Means for Farms: Part 1

Recently, the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) released the proposed rule for Food Traceability, which includes a number of important Food Safety Modernization (FSMA) components such as farm-specific exemptions and scale-appropriate requirements. However, while farmers can celebrate many practical provisions in FDA’s new proposed rule, there are still some areas of concern that small farms and food businesses, in particular, should prepare to take action on once again.

The deadline for farmers and organizations to comment on the proposed Food Traceability rule is January 21, 2020. NSAC will share deeper analysis and takeaways for your proposed comment in future blog posts.

2020 has proven to be an unprecedented year of upheaval for all of us. When the COVID-19 pandemic set in, it had immediate impacts on our farm and food system. Farmers lost critical markets and sales, workers faced unsafe conditions without adequate protections, and communities saw the need for emergency food aid spike. At NSAC, we jumped into action to  address these urgent needs by advocating for Congress to act and working with our 130 members to get needed aid to farmers and families. At the same time, the rest of our work didn’t stop!

2021 is also a major policy year with a new President, new Congress, new USDA, and no end in sight for the pandemic! It’s time to push hard for DC decision makers to reinvest in longer-term COVID-19 recovery needs AND the structural reforms to food and farm policy we know we need to address the climate crisis and build an equitable and sustainable future.

Help us start 2021 strong and be a part of the solution: every dollar helps. Your change can make change!
