Urban Farm Assistant Job Available at Capital Roots’ Produce Project in The Capital Region of New York State – 2021

Since 2009 the high tunnels, market garden, flower border, and small orchard of this organically managed urban farm have helped transmit valuable life and job skills to high school youth. Join committed staff, interns, and youth leaders to bring our harvest to market, build community, and help chart a new path for 20 students this summer. The Urban Farm Assistant reports to the Produce Project Farm Manager, works a 40 hour week Tues-Sat. for 30 weeks from April to November, and is integral to our mission of Growing Food, Building Community, and Empowering Youth.

Urban Farm Assistant Salary and Benefits:

We are committed to utilizing the strengths of the applicant and encouraging their interests, with the intent of improving their experience and continuing the evolution of our program. Pay is $13 hourly, with paid sick time. Produce for taking home is included, as well as snacks and communal meals during the summer session. Although Troy has become a bit trendy of late, it remains quite affordable. Our parent organization, Capital Roots, has 40 years of contacts useful in assisting with housing and making you feel at home if you are new to the area. Within this growing organization and community there are many paths to fulfillment and advancement.

Qualifications and Skills:

Applicants must be problem-solvers capable of working hard on their own, as well as cooperatively with others. Training is thorough, but we prefer at least one season of farm experience. Youth experience, familiarity with small engines, carpentry etc. are all appreciated, as are enthusiasm, communication, and a sunny disposition!  Above all, the Assistant should be unafraid to ask for help, or ask questions. The work demands a Driver’s License with a clean record and the ability to lift 40 pounds.

Responsibilities include:

• Working with and taking instruction from the Produce Project Farmer, to sow, transplant, harvest etc., to maximize production and farm income
• Collaborating with staff, interns, and student leaders to mentor and provide oversight to youth
• Maintaining and using farm infrastructure, equipment and necessary records, including our high tunnels, BCS tractor, and crop plans
• Preparing for and managing volunteers, both groups and individuals
