General Description: We farm 115 acres near the Blue ridge mountains and raise pastured poultry, eggs, beef and pork. Beyond organic, we strive to generate the cleanest, most healthful, and tasty product we can.

Educational Opportunities: On the job education and experience. Excellent opportunity to learn to inner workings of the business side of farming.

Stipend: $500 monthly.

Housing: Housing Private on farm intern housing with shared bath, full kitchen, washer/dryer, bunk style bedrooms. – You supply your linens, and other things you may need. – We supply cleaning materials, toilet paper. – Wireless Internet

Internship Details: Daily activities include collecting eggs, moving broilers to fresh pasture, moving cattle to fresh pasture, feeding all poultry and pigs as necessary. Additionally, participating marketing and business development. Any and all farm chores as necessary.

Who we are Saddle Ridge Farm is a family-run, sustainable farm in the Culpeper, VA area. We provide natural meats without added hormones, antibiotics or man-made additives. The feeds provided to animals raised on Saddle Ridge Farm are non-GMO.

Saddle Ridge Farm is located on 115 beautiful semi-wooded acres. The cherished land has been in the Farrish family for over 40 years. In 2010, after careful consideration and study of sustainable farming methods, Saddle Ridge Farm was established with the goal of producing food that is far better for people than commercially produced food. We believe that most people prefer better food for their families, but don’t have the lifestyle, means or land to produce it independently. We have found it very rewarding to be in the position to provide such a service.

Internship Internship positions at Saddle Ridge Farm provide the opportunity to actively be apart and learn about successful small, sustainable farming. Please understand that the internship is by no means easy. The internship will require hard work and long hours in the field daily, but in return, it will offer the invaluable benefit of hands on experience and learning about the inner workings of the farm. The goal and focus of Saddle Ridge Farms internship program is to train future farmers. Ideal candidates are eager, teachable, coach-able, dependable, positive, self-motivated individuals looking for agricultural training or has aspirations to own their own farm.

Job Description

At Saddle Ridge Farms, interns are involved in all aspects of the farm and work closely with the farmers. Interns will learn to use the tractors and equipment, irrigation systems, handling, distribution, and animal care. At Saddle Ridge Farm, Interns will help raise and care for 100% grass-fed cows, Pasture raised hogs, broiler chickens and hens. Working on the farm requires the physical capability to contribute daily in a rigorous, fast-paced agricultural setting. Farm work offers an incredibly rewarding and demanding work environment and life experience. Please consider this commitment before applying.

Meals: Farm meats, produce and eggs.

Skills Desired: No work experience necessary but must have a good attitude, a willingness to learn and be self motivated.

Compensation – Interns are compensated as follows:

Stipend. Farm produce as the season provides, farm meats (Select), and eggs.

Qualifications We are looking for reliable, eager, teachable, responsible and hardworking individuals who are able to receive feedback, coach-able, self-motivated, follow directions and communicate well with others. Excellent people skills, initiative, and the physical ability to lift 50 pounds regularly are required. Interns should expect to work outside in all weather conditions including rain, snow and daily summer heat of 90-100 degrees and have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. Previous farming experience is not required, however it is essential that candidates are committed to the farming lifestyle and all that it demands.. Finding a good match between what our farm has to offer and the needs and expectations of an intern are incredibly important. Interns are essential to the successful operation of the farm each season.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships require a commitment of 12 months. They will be offered to those who qualify, upon successful completion of an internship, and if such desire is expressed.
