Job: Summer Gardening Program Leader, San Francisco

Enterprise for High School Students (EHSS) is a citywide school-to-work/youth development agency that guides youth to find and retain jobs, trains and engages them in experiential learning, and helps them explore career interests.  Enterprise programs provide San Francisco youth with job readiness and retention training, internships, job shadowing, summer gardening, service learning and career counseling. Title: Summer Gardening Program Team Leader Reports to the Summer Gardening Program Coordinator Position Objective: To supervise, support, and work alongside a team of up to 8 high school students in a seven-week landscaping and gardening project in the Botanical Gardens of Golden Gate Park, Buena Vista Park, McLaren Park or St. Mary’s Park Complex. Salary: $17.00 per hour Dates and hours: June 14 through July 30, 2010; Monday through Friday from 8:45 am to 1:15 pm for a total of up to 25 hours per week. Mandatory orientation and training will be held for two days the week before at both the Enterprise office and the assigned park.  Additional hours include time for planning, meetings, and paperwork.

Duties:

  • Supervise, work alongside and assist high school students with gardening and park maintenance.  Tasks include but are not limited to plant and brush removal, pruning, litter removal, planting local and native species and building erosion control structures.
  • In conjunction with the Recreation and Parks gardeners, provide instruction in appropriate tool use, safety and gardening techniques.
  • Be responsible for crew’s safety, job performance and morale.
  • Facilitate first day orientation and additional team building activities throughout the summer.
  • Work cooperatively with the park’s gardeners and Enterprise program supervisor and coordinator.
  • Instruct and role model to student crew members appropriate work place behavior and expectations.  Enforce disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Keep records of activities to include work in progress, attendance and hours worked of crew members, and write a final evaluation of the students and the project.
  • Attend all staff training and staff meetings.
  • Facilitate an environmental education segment regarding natural area and native habitat restoration.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a leadership capacity with high school students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to work cooperatively in a group setting.
  • Ability to demonstrate gardening procedures and the correct usage of tools.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
