2016 Garden Internship at Foxhollow Farm in Kentucky

General Description:

Foxhollow Farm is a 1300 acre Biodynamic farm community located in Crestwood, KY; 15 miles north of Louisville, KY. We raise 100% grassfed beef on over 650 acres of pastures and are dedicated to growing healthy food and strengthening the relationship between human beings and nature. Entrepreneurial farmers lease small plots of land and grow a variety of produce and pastured animals through our partner grower program. We invite the public to experience our working farm through small farm tours, a nature trail, a concert series, and a Fall Festival. Foxhollow is seeking two dynamic interns to assist with growing, harvesting and selling market garden products, assisting with events, and making value added products.

Internship starts: April 25th, 2016

Internship ends: October 22, 2016

Number of Interns: 2

App Deadline: February 15, 2016

Minimum Length of Stay: 6 months

Meals: Produce and meat from the farm is provided. We have farm lunches once per month and occasional potlucks and team meals. CSA/Market Gardener hosts lunch every Friday harvest day.

Skills Desired: Previous farm experience is helpful, but not required. We are seeking people with a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and a desire to learn. We have found that people who can work independently as well as in a team setting are most likely to succeed at Foxhollow Farm. We are seeking someone who has the ability to precisely follow instructions and has some understanding of math concepts, including measuring weight and volume. This job often requires strenuous physical demand. Interns need a high level of fitness and stamina, as they spend a lot of time walking, stooping, squatting, lifting heavy objects and working outside. A four week trial period and check in is required to assure our compatibility.

Educational Opportunities: Education is valued at Foxhollow. Hands on learning takes place through discussions and lessons in the field, training throughout the gardens, and educational pasture walks led by our Head Herdsman and our Biodynamic consultant. Interns have access to a library of books on organic and biodynamic farming along with business planning templates and resources. Monthly Partner Grower meetings, workshops, and educational visits to other farms are also a part of the intern program.

Stipend: Stipend provided.

Housing: On farm housing provided.

Preferred method Of Contact: By phone or e-mail. We strongly encourage an in-person, on-farm interview for serious consideration.

Garden Internship details: Foxhollow Farm’s Internship program exposes the Intern to a diverse mix of farming models. The intern will work in a CSA/market garden, tend to an educational raised bed garden, and assist with the farm’s pick your own pumpkin patch and corn maze. This person will also get a holistic view of a Biodynamic Farm Community, learning about our large scale grassfed beef operation and outreach events. The Internship Program is co-lead by a Partner Grower with 9 years of experience as a Market/CSA gardener and the Director of Foxhollow Farm Community. The interns work with the Market/CSA gardener in the field on Mondays and Fridays and at Farmer’s Market on Saturdays. Interns work with the Director Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in Foxhollow Farm’s raised bed garden, pumpkin patch, and corn maze. He or she will learn about Biodynamics and the grassfed beef business and assist with events and canning as needed. Interns are expected to work 45-50 hours per week. The job may require very early morning, evening, and weekend work. The goal of the internship program is to give individuals seeking a career in farming the resources needed to succeed. We strive to teach aspiring gardeners how to be good land stewards while growing food for their local community.
