Feast Farm Manager Job in Montpelier, VT – 2021 Season

About Feast Farm

Feast Farm is a collaborative program of Montpelier’s Community Services divisions: Parks, Recreation, and the Montpelier Senior Activity Center (MSAC). Feast Farm provides nutritious, local food to our aging population through the FEAST meals program. Additionally, we endeavor to bring people of all ages to the farm in order to provide them with meaningful work and volunteer experiences, and to educate them about sustainable agriculture. We are seeking an experienced, mission-driven Farm Manager to help expand our production and programming in 2021.

Responsibilities

This person will be the main “boots on the ground” at the farm growing food for MSAC’s FEAST meals program. FEAST provides community meals to older adults and delivers to those who have difficulty leaving their homes. The Farm Manager will manage the no-till market garden, which is less than one acre and has limited infrastructure. They will see crop production through from seeding to harvest. As this project is still in its early stages, this position will require innovation and thrift.

In addition to leading up vegetable production, the Farm Manager will be responsible for supervising volunteers and school groups. Feast Farm has a strong contingent of volunteers of all ages and abilities, and the Farm Manager will work alongside them in order to provide meaningful work tailored to their abilities and interests. The Farm Manager will also be an integral part of farm camp, which will take place in August.

This job is 40-hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8am – 4:30pm. This position will take place May-August, with the potential for up to a 2-month extension pending funding.

Qualifications

  • Experience in annual vegetable production, no-till growing practices, and at least two years of farm experience.
    • Knowledge of diverse herb and vegetable varieties, care, and harvest
    • Ability to ID pest/disease damage and implement action using organic methods
    • Experience with farm equipment including basic hand tools and small engines
  • Experience leading a crew or volunteer groups, ability to organize diverse groups of people
  • Strong emotional intelligence and good communication skills
  • Willingness and capability to do physical work in all weather and to lift at least 50lbs
  • Strong work ethic
  • Reliable transportation
