Job: Garden Manager at The Farm Institute, Massachusetts

Reports To: Executive Director AND Works With: Garden Apprentices, Teachers, Students, Farm Staff, Office Manager, Volunteers

SUMMARY: Responsible for the coordination and implementation of the FARM Institute’s 8-acre production garden with sales and distribution to CSA, farmers market, farm stand and restaurants. This is a full time salaried position beginning immediately

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Manage 8-acre production garden & greenhouse operation.  Includes crop planning, seed and supply ordering, tillage, fertility, care, harvest and handling, irrigation, crop rotation; Hire, train, supervise, evaluate garden apprentices (4-5); Facilitate participation in West Tisbury Farmer’s Market throughout growing season on Wednesdays and Saturdays; Manage sales, marketing and distribution of FARM Institute produce off site.  Including restaurants, groceries and other markets; Supervise and coordinate care, maintenance, cleanliness and organization of production garden fields, greenhouses, irrigation, equipment, tools, stations, sheds and related spaces

QUALIFICATIONS & WORK EXPERIENCE

  • 3 or more years experience in production gardening
  • At least 2 full seasons of garden management experience including daily operations and staff management
  • Tractor operation and maintenance skills a must
  • CSA, Farm stand, and farmers market sales, distribution and marketing skills
  • Experience and ability working with multiple colleagues; good organization and attention to detail, and ability to work efficiently and effectively without close supervision
  • Experiences that exemplify innovative methods for collaboration and problem solving
